On World Building (Briefly)

So the plan was to try and write a blog post every Sunday about my writing progress....

However, I went to a wedding last weekend (on Sunday) and had to choose between writing-writing or blog-writing. I chose the former.

At that point, I had just transitioned to a new part of the current story that required new world building. On one hand, I—and I’m sure many writers—love the world-building part of the process. It feels like you’re on an adventure to “discover” the plot. I generally have an idea of where I want the story to go, but I’m experiencing this adventure alongside the characters.

On the other hand, world building is tough. I feel like readers of fantasy these days have very high expectations for internal cohesion, and you have to keep track of all the world’s nuances, big and small, to avoid plot holes or inconsistencies. Every time I create something new, whether it’s a character, twist, city, or just a general idea, I have to ensure that it “fits” with everything already in the world. Luckily, I’m working on The Fate of Creation III, and I’ve already done so much world building that there’s only so much more I can logically include at this point, if that makes sense?

With that, I admit I’m writing this blog because I didn’t do any writing-writing today, so thanks for the distraction. To be fair, I got absolutely swamped with work this weekend AND had a gnarly stomach bug. Hopefully, by next weekend I’ll have more to write home about regarding the actual writing and not just rambling to fill space so I can say I “blogged.”

By the way, I’m still riding the RIM wave. If you need to achieve goals, try heartbreak—that’s all I gotta say. Just try it once before you knock it.
